How to help with cat weight loss

and helping move your moggies from couch to 5k in the healthiest way

We’re working on something really special in the Republic for our citizens who are a little on the chunkier side – the Cuddly Cats Club. Designed specifically to give those cats on a weight loss mission some support within our fabulous community, with exercise tips and motivation to get those felines, streamline.

But for those without access to the VIP club, we thought we’d chat some more about it here on the Republic blog, to give you some awesome tips to help your curvy kittens reach the goal weight that’s healthiest for them.

  1. It all starts with a balanced diet

Unfortunately it’s super common (and easy) for cat owners to over feed their moggys. We all know how difficult it is to say no to the puss-in-boots-eyes, even if it is at 3am to stop their racket, but overfeeding is an easy way to end up with a slightly too plump pet. That’s where we come in. We designed our tailored feeding plans to make sure each and every one of our citizens is getting just what they need from their food to flourish and be the best they can be.

So many cats are deemed ‘grazers’, with food being available to nibble round the clock, but they thrive on portion control and the perfect balance of nutrients. We tailor their feeding plans using everything from breed, age and activity level to be sure your cat gets a perfect diet designed just for them. Controlling their portions is the first step on the way to ultimate cathlete (cat athlete) status.

  1. An inspiring exercise regime

If we know cats to be anything, it’s lazy. Don’t get us wrong, we admire it. Their ability to nap in any given situation, at any hour of the day deserves applause, but it doesn’t always mean the best for their waistline. And this can be particularly tricky when it comes to precious house cats, who often don’t get to roam for miles surveying their pride lands. So coming up with some fun way to keep them active and mobile is a must.

Fluffy chaser toys and butterfly inspired batting objects are another way to get them leaping and pouncing their way to 5k in no time. For the more adventurous, consider a climbing tree or maybe even a cat wheel. Some of our very own citizens have sung the praises of said wheel, making it the perfect alternative to the dangerous outdoors, a teeny tiger treadmill of sorts. Even a simple ball of string could be enough to motivate your mog up off of the armchair to engage in play, be it 2 minutes or 2 hours, it will make a difference.

  1. Tread carefully with treats

(If you’re reading aloud, I recommend you switch to a whisper). We know, we know, Dreamies (other treats are available). Whatever is in their secret recipe really does drive the cats wild, but maybe look at switching to cat grass or catnip to still give your cats that buzz, without the extra calories. We love to spoil our housemates, often slipping the odd human food leftovers into the bowl after dinner, or sharing your smoked salmon brunch, but it’s important to stick to the rules for the good of our four legged friends. Consistency is key, and maybe once your cat reaches their goal weight, a sprinkling of Dreamies from time to time or an occasional portion of roast dinner scraps won’t be deemed as detrimental to their diet.

We hope this helps you and your fur pal along their way to feline fitness. We’re always here with help and advice to offer if you need any more tips, just drop us a line at [email protected] or join our Facebook Community to chat to other cat pawrents and get involved with the Cuddly Cats Club.
