UPDATE 02/09/21:
We’re always all over any cat news, and the news around Pancytopenia has been no different. We’ve been keeping a close eye on the proceedings regarding the cat food recall. Last week, the FSA delivered their latest update; their testing has not been able to definitively determine a cause.
Initial word on the street (official scientific hypothesis) was that mycotoxins themselves were unsafe for cats. That’s not always the case – “the mere presence of mycotoxins in cat food does not necessarily pose a risk to cats. Mycotoxins are naturally occurring substances produced by certain types of moulds (fungi) which can grow on a variety of different crops and feedstuffs “ (Food.gov.uk)
Investigations continue, but the previously impacted cat food manufacturers have now been given the all-clear to get back to business.
To reassure you, Republic of Cats food has not been impacted at all. If you’d like to talk about it, we’re on hand to do so in our usual haunts including chat Chat Republic of Cats or WhatsApp us.
UPDATE 11/8/21:
It’s been a while since the cat food recall hit the news, but we wanted to reassure you that we’re keeping a close eye on any changes in the news. According to the Pet Food Manufacturers Association, investigations have identified a potential link to three brands: Applaws, Ava and by Sainsbury’s. On the 15th of June, a number of products from those brands (all manufactured by Fold Hill Foods) were recalled as a precautionary measure.
The Food Standards Agency’s investigation is in progress, yet to finalise a definitive cause. Their most recent discovery suggests the problem is caused by mycotoxins, a dangerous type of mould that has been linked to all three of the impacted brands.
As always, your cat’s health and safety is our top priority, so we take the matter very seriously. We can assure you that our food has not been impacted. If you’d like to talk about it, we’re on hand to do so in our usual haunts including via email or WhatsApp us.

Yesterday cat owners across the land will have been plagued with worry over the breaking news of both Sainsburys and Pets at Home recalling some of their products, due to a potential link with a deadly feline disease.
These superstores, alongside Applaws cat food sold on Amazon, have pulled dry food products from their shelves after an unusual rise in cases of the rare feline Pancytopenia, which can be fatal for our furry friends.
The Food Standards Agency has said the current outbreak of Pancytopenia was potentially linked to specific food products that have been recalled as a precautionary measure. Naturally, any pet parents out there have alarm bells ringing with concern for their floofs, but we want to reassure our citizens, and all of catkind, that you can rely on the Republic.
Our tailored recipes are still safe for your citizens to enthusiastically enjoy, shipped from our fair shores to your door with your cat’s health as our top priority. We wanted you to hear it directly from us and to reassure you and your furry housemate that our meals are still 10 out of 10, with no links to the recent concerns of other pet food manufacturers.
That being said, it is an anxious time for many owners with the wellbeing of our cats always number one, the fur kids come first! The advice is out, urging any humans currently feeding affected brands to their cats to shop elsewhere, and seek alternative food whilst the case is being thoroughly investigated.
